Listening to Adrian’s post-Silverstone interviews I found myself thinking a lot about Spa 2011.
There was this huge panic over front wheel blistering at the time, especially at RBR.
Anyways. There was this shot of the Red Bull pit wall right after Seb and Mark crossed the chequered flag for a one-two finish, and while everyone else was celebrating around them Christian was comforting poor Adrian, who looked like the weight of the world had just been lifted off his shoulders. Then in the prep room before going up to the podium he looked genuinely choked up, hugging Mark and Sebastian and saying “I’m so relieved to see you boys.”
I remember that later they had Christian on the BBC Forum and DC asked him about Adrian wiping away tears on the pit wall, and Christian just said that driver safety was incredibly important to Adrian. And then some time later Martin came down and said that he’d just been talking to Jonathan Wheatley about how sensitive Adrian is about safety and that of course some of that was because he’d designed the car Senna died in.
Obviously everyone cares about driver safety. But that was the first time I really got a sense of the crushing responsibility Adrian operates under at all times, and just how taxing that can be on someone who has the beautifully vulnerable heart of an artist.
(As you can see it’s very dangerous when I start rambling about why I fucking love this team and everyone on it).
